In re: the latest "Why don't we write more female characters?" (where 'we' = 'm/m slashers,' because m/m slashers, after all, comprise the only really important segment of fandom) debate, I have a very simple solution:
Write more female characters.
Really. Don't say "But there are no strong or interesting female characters in the source text!" Don't say "But relationships involving women are inherently fraught with icky power imbalances!" Don't say anything about why it can't be done. Just do it. If there aren't enough female characters in your fic, then write more female characters.
It's that goddamn simple.
