LJ has been owned by a Russian company, SUP, for some years, but until recently, the servers were in California, and thus subject to US law. This is no longer be the case. Links on the ramifications of this (English speakers will need to use Google Translate on the last two):

I have done a traceroute ( http://ping.eu/traceroute/ ) on my own LJ, and it appears to come through a Russian server now.

There are unconfirmed reports that journals with 'objectionable' content, such as pro-Ukraine blogs, are being deleted. There's also what looks like a mass migration of Russian users into Dreamwidth over the last week or so.

There are all kinds of ramifications for this move, most of them bad. For people located outside Russia, I think the greatest risk is simply that SUP has decided that the non-Russian side of LJ hasn't been profitable in ages, and is never going to be profitable, and this is the first step in shutting it down entirely. So if you have a Livejournal with content that you'd like to preserve, now is a real good time to back it up.

https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=127 (importing personal blogs)
https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=230 (importing communities)

You can import tags, icons, filters, posts, and comments – the whole shebang. You can also set up crossposting to Livejournal (I've been crossposting to LJ from DW for years.)

If you have no Dreamwidth account, if someone imports a comment you made, it will be made under your Open ID account. If you make a DW account, you can claim these comments:

http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=84 (How can I claim my OpenID account with my Dreamwidth account?)

If you're already on Dreamwidth, or is you're setting up a backup account there now, please let me know so I can friend you over there. I'd hate to lose track of everyone if we wake up one morning and find a big ol' 404 error where LJ used to be.

This is really bad ...

Well, like I said above, unless you live in Russia, the worst that could happen is that your journal gets deleted. Not that that's a good thing. :/ I seriously doubt they care enough about non-Russian users to go after them, though, so I'm more worried about the whole service going away.

Well, this is probably the last nail in the coffin for LJ.
Dec. 30th, 2016 09:50 pm (UTC)
It's been living on borrowed time for years, alas. :(

If this doesn't kill off LJ for good, then nothing will...:(
Dec. 30th, 2016 09:50 pm (UTC)
It's kind of a zombie, really! >:)

Sounds like the beginning of the end. And I only just got here :-(

I will be checking out Dreamwidth.

DW isn't as pretty as LJ. It's a much smaller company, with only a few dedicated programmers. But it's a perfectly serviceable LJ substitute if you can put up with the less than gorgeous interface.

I've been on DW for years also. I cross post from there, so everything I've done since then is both places. As far as I know, the things I imported back then mirror my LJ, but it was hard to tell. I don't think I'm going to obsess over it though. My thoughts from 10-12 years ago probably aren't all that important. LOL.
This is kind of scary, though. I don't want to lose track of LJ friends, but I'm wondering about the wisdom of deleting my LJ at some point.

I just went and imported comments, since I'd fallen a bit behind on that. But yeah, I seriously doubt that non-Russian users are in any kind of real danger. It's just that the risk of the service going away entirely, for boring economic reasons, has gone up considerably, I think.

I'm thinking maybe just delete. :(

I suppose it depends on how important your journal content is to you. I know I'd hate to lose a lot of mine. Hence, backup.
Dec. 30th, 2016 09:48 pm (UTC)
This looks like a death knell for livejournal.
Dec. 30th, 2016 09:54 pm (UTC)
Yeah, though until they actually unplug the servers, I expect people will hang on here till the bitter end.

Thanks for this very informative post. KInda like 2016 to murder my favorite place on the interwebs before it goes.
Dec. 30th, 2016 10:42 pm (UTC)
Yeah. Though it's entirely possible that things will just sort of keep limping along like they have been for a while yet.

We are!
Dec. 30th, 2016 10:59 pm (UTC)
Well this sucks :(
Dec. 31st, 2016 12:17 am (UTC)
It certainly does. :/

As if 2016 didn't already suck enough, now fandom is getting kicked in the nuts, too.

Does DW have any sort of scrapbook feature?
Dec. 31st, 2016 12:17 am (UTC)
Unfortunately, DW has only the most basic and crappy of image hosting. https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqcat=media#faq248

It's the biggest strike against them. :/ I don't have a lot of photos hosted on LJ, and I can move them to my website if necessary, but it would be a pain in the ass tracking down the links I'd have to change.

I'm set up over there, same name. I think I added you correctly.

Thanks for the heads up. It's given me the kick in the arse to backup my journal, which I do use as a personal diary for certain family events. Apparently I created a Dreamwidth account back in 2011, and have you and another listed, but that looks about it.

I've got you added on my goldenusagi DW name, but I'm adding you on my new silverusagi as well. I may start using that one if I migrate for real (instead of just backing up) because of wonky double entries and weird imports from multiple backups on goldenusagi.
Dec. 31st, 2016 12:20 am (UTC)
I'll make sure to add you back!
Dec. 30th, 2016 11:38 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the reminder to back up in case this all goes phut any time soon. (US servers are already heavily not recommended for holding personal data from the EU, so I'm not going to freak out over security implications, *g*. But where it suggests the business is going is not hopeful.) I think we're already friended, but I'm the same name sans underscores over at DW. And I may yet remember to post there...
Dec. 31st, 2016 12:22 am (UTC)
Yes, I think we're already hooked up over there. Possibly nothing will happen, but no harm in being prepared...
